Company History

TomThe company was initiated by Tom "DJ Deacon Blues" Ohlendorf and the history is given from that perspective.

My experience as a DJ begins in 1983 when I began helping my father put on social events for his American Legion Post. These began as small social gatherings but the addition of music soon turned them into dances.

At that time I was inexperienced in the methods of providing quality sound to large groups of people so my initial DJ gear mostly consisted of home stereo equipment. As I learned the sophistication and quality of the gear improved.

While this was technically a business it was more of a hobby because I did it more for enjoyment than profit and all money I took in went to the purchase of better gear.

In mid-1993 my father was taken ill and I closed down the business to be able to spend more time with him. He passed away in November of 1993 and I met my soon-to-be wife in December of 1993. In February of 1994 I proposed to her and in October we were married. While I had gained lots of experience helping family and friends through their wedding plans, my wife and I got a real “baptism of fire” developing our own. All-in-all, things went well but I do regret the choice we made for our DJ for several reasons; it was that experience that kept the thought that I could do a better job in the back of my mind.

In 2001 I got back into the DJ business. My first event was my mother’s 75thbirthday. I purchased a small setup and used music that I already had on CD. The setup sounded good and was fairly portable so I put together a business plan, did some research on pricing on the internet, and launched the business as The Good Knight DJ. The name was based on my work as a Grand Knight with the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic charitable organization.

I did some events in 2001 and then grew the business in 2002 when I partnered with a friend and his friend. The three of us became Good Knight Entertainment. This partnership grew and the company along with it.

In 2004 I took another step forward by becoming a member of the Baltimore Area DJ Association and through membership seminars I learned many valuable things. I also attended several DJ expos and learned additional skills at the workshops.

In late 2008 the economic downturn, stress, burn out, and a desire to refocus on my religious endeavors and spend more time with my wife caused me to start thinking about closing the business down. In January of 2009 I actually made the decision and made the announcement to all of my current and past clients.

In May and June of 2009 comments from clients and guests made me reconsider that decision. I heard comments like, “Why would you want to close such a great business down?”, “I think you are making a mistake”, “What were you thinking?”, and so on. I considered all of these and made the decision to redesign Good Knight Entertainment. Initially that design was to be a single operator wedding entertainment provider.

In July of 2009 I began redeveloping the web site for Good Knight Entertainment and redeployed in August of 2009. I also reached the final decision to keep Good Knight Entertainment as an all-occasion mobile entertainment service and as a multi-op.

So, now we stand here in the present with me and my merry band of assistants ready to provide a reception that will knock the socks off you and your guests so give me a call and set up that interview.
